Project Type: Office, Interiors
Role: Interior Design, Architectural Design, Architect of Record
The concept behind 1801 E. 6th is to provide a classy, timeless building that fits-in and energizes the rapidly growing East Austin neighborhood. The building is a modern interpretation of classical architecture through using honest and authentic materials. Exterior elements such as exposed concrete, factory windows, weathered brick, and steel, were incorporated to provide a striking presence and richness that are often lacking in typical office buildings. Expansive glazing is utilized on the front façade to maximize northern natural light, as well as its connection to the active E. 6th street. Wrapped around a soaring heritage tree, the courtyard is a cozy place to conduct informal meetings and gatherings, or simply to take a break during/after a busy day. Rain gardens and cisterns are found within this courtyard, to celebrate the importance of sustainable design.
The interior design and materiality are consistent with the building architecture, to further carry out the character, vibe and sense of place. The lobby is designed as a welcoming, comfortable space that is virtually an extension of the offices above. Pockets of collaboration spaces were planned within to promote spontaneous social interactions, discussions, and brainstorming sessions. Reclaimed wood and other recyclable materials are used throughout the interiors, echoing the environmentally conscious culture. The unique, non-sterile design is intended to create a fun environment that evokes and fosters creativity.
